* Emergency department open house
Rouge Valley Health System
News Release
Nov. 16, 2009 - After years of planning, fundraising and construction, the community will get a sneak peek of the newly-expanded emergency department at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP).
The media is invited to a special photo opportunity during our opening ceremony on Friday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. in the new emergency department at RVAP. The community is invited to tour the facility for our public open house on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new emergency department is expected to be in use at the end of the month.
"This is a great step forward for health care in our community," says RVHS board chair Janet Ecker. "Significant modernization and expansion projects of this size take a long time to complete. But due to the incredible work and persistence of our staff, physicians, volunteers, community supporters, our hospital Foundation, the auxiliary, the provincial government and our political leaders, we are ready to open our new emergency department. I offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to all those who have brought us to this exciting day."
Rik Ganderton, president and chief executive officer of RVHS, says, “We are well enroute to completion of this three-year construction project for an official grand opening in the fall of 2010. We also thank Aecon, our construction partners, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Central East Local Health Integration Network and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and for advancing this construction project.”
- Features of the new space -
The new RVAP emergency department will provide space for the anticipated 60,000 patient visits a year. Staff and physicians currently care for 46,000-plus patients a year in a space designed for 20,000. The new emergency department also features a special area to treat patients who may have come in contact with dangerous chemicals. Ambulances will access the emergency department by a dedicated road through a new four-bay covered entrance.
The opening of the emergency department represents the first major completed phase of the RVAP redevelopment project. When complete, the entire expansion will mean about 140,000 square feet of new and renovated space for emergency and related services.
