Rouge Valley Health System is home to a comprehensive, six-month cardiac rehabilitation program, which provides follow-up care after treatment for heart problems, such as a heart attack, or after you have had a procedure such as coronary angioplasty or cardiac surgery.

The program is offered at our Lobraico Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre, which encompasses the 11th floor at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campus. Our cardiac rehab facilities include an 14-lap mile track, which has been newly rubberized to improve comfort and performance for patients—as well as treadmills, exercise bikes and Nu-step machines; weight sets; and an education theatre.

Through this program, we provide rehabilitation, education and risk-factor management to cardiac outpatients. Our program has been serving the community since 1997, and has helped over 10,000 patients to take control of their heart health.

Cardiac rehab services

We offer a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program that is based on a solid foundation of exercise and education, and is individually customized to best meet each patient’s needs.

  • Education classes: Through our series of education classes, we teach you and your family about heart disease and how to make heart-healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Exercise testing: Prior to starting your exercise classes, you will come in to our cardiac diagnostics department for an exercise test on a bike (or treadmill). This test will measure your fitness, and your exercise therapist will use the results to prescribe a safe exercise program for you.

  • Weekly exercise program: You will come to Rouge Valley for your 90-minute weekly exercise class over the course of six months. Classes include mini-talks on heart topics; warm-up exercises; strength training using hand weights; aerobic exercise, including walking, treadmill or biking; and cool-down and stretching exercises.

  • Individualized home exercise plan: You will also be given an exercise program to complete at home, and will be asked to record your exercise in a diary to be used as a weekly communication tool with your exercise therapist. This home program will enable you to establish a regular exercise routine that can be continued as a part of your heart-healthy lifestyle after completing Rouge Valley’s six-month cardiac rehab program.

  • Counseling and support: Thanks to our multidisciplinary team at Rouge Valley, as a patient in our cardiac rehab program you will have access to other hospital services—including diabetes education, dietitian support and psychosocial support services.

  • Alumni program: Once you have completed the cardiac rehabilitation program, you are invited to continue through our alumni program. This is an optional fee-for-service program, which can replace the traditional health club atmosphere and provide ongoing motivation and support for maintenance of regular exercise and heart healthy living.
