Nuclear Medicine PDF Print E-mail

The focus of nuclear medicine is on physiology rather than anatomy. We investigate the function of the organ of interest (we do obtain anatomical information also).

Nuclear medicine technology uses radioactive tracers to visualize organs and tissues. The tracer is usually administered intravenously, but may also be administered orally or by aerosol. Tracers are designed to image particular organs or systems such as the heart, bones or lungs.

Nuclear medicine studies are not harmful to the patients, although there is some radiation exposure. Every attempt is made to minimize the dose to the patients.
