Our Centenary site is turning 50!
Dear community members,
Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s (SRH) Centenary site is celebrating its 50th anniversary in July! We’ll be proudly recognizing this important milestone beginning this month and throughout the year.
The history of the Centenary site dates back to 1963, when a group of residents and local leaders realized there was a need for a second hospital to serve the growing Township of Scarborough in addition to our General site, known then as Scarborough General Hospital. Centenary Health Centre opened on July 1, 1967 through the united effort and longstanding support of members of the surrounding community. Since then, the hospital has provided outstanding care to hundreds of thousands of patients and families.
Like at our other sites, many of the talented and passionate staff, physicians, and volunteers at Centenary are longstanding members of our hospital and we’re fortunate to have such a dedicated group of individuals.
We’ll be celebrating this ‘golden’ anniversary in a variety of ways. For July 1, we’ll be hanging Centenary 50 banners above the Court lobby and Margaret Birch Wing entrances at Centenary, and we’ll have decals going up throughout the site.
Online, we’ll be using the hashtag #Centenary50 to share historical photos and interesting facts about the Centenary site via our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Everyone is invited to join in this conversation and share their memories of our community hospital using #Centenary50.
Later this month, you’ll be able to take a trip back in time and share a photo of yourself and your friends in front of a full-size Centenary 50 wall backdrop that will be located onsite.
We’ll also be highlighting the incredible history of our hospital through stories from our staff, physicians, volunteers, and donors.
All of these activities will lead up to an event in the fall where we can all get together to celebrate the legacy of the Centenary site. More information about this very special event will be available in the near future.
The rich history of each of SRH’s sites – Centenary, Birchmount, and General – reflects how our community has come together time and time again to build great health care for Scarborough and the region.
Please join us as we celebrate how our Centenary site has changed lives, strengthened the community, and helped it grow.
