The significant redevelopment of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) continues as planned. The project is on time, on budget and on schedule to be completed in 2010. We are adding 140,000 square feet of new and renovated space to greatly enhance our emergency and related services, ensuring that the residents of west Durham have access to the best healthcare services possible.

We have been fortunate to have strong community and government support for the redevelopment, and look forward to the project’s completion in 2010. Here are some details of what the redevelopment of RVAP will mean to our growing west Durham families:

  • A new Emergency Department, scheduled to open in 2009, will provide space for an anticipated 60,000 patient visits a year

  • A renovated and better designed Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Diagnostic area will improve access and provide more privacy for patients and their families

  • A new Laboratory will be built in renovated space and services will continue to be provided for inpatients and outpatients

  • A new 30-bed Complex Continuing Care Unit will allow the hospital to care for patients who are transitioning from acute care to long term care or home care

  • An expanded Ambulatory Care Unit will provide space for outpatient clinic visits, a fracture clinic, outpatient procedures, medical day care and pre-admit visits

  • A new cafeteria will offer a bright, sunlit eating area

  • The new east entrance will house a new auxiliary gift shop, a volunteer information desk, a redesigned admitting department and the senior administrative offices

  • The new west entrance will house a new main security department and a volunteer information desk

We have requested that the Central East LHIN fund 29 additional Acute Care medical beds for RVAP, which are desperately needed now and even more so with the Emergency Department expansion.
