Ultrasound is a valuable, non-invasive way of examining many of the body’s internal organs including abdomen, pelvis, obstetric, musculoskeletal, breast, thyroid, scrotal, and major blood vessels. This kind of diagnostic imaging works by using a transducer to transmit and receive the high-frequency sound waves, which is then displayed as a visual image. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs and enable radiologists to see blood flow as well as structure. Doppler ultrasound is a special technique used to examine blood flow and help evaluate, blockages to blood flow, build-up of plaque in a vessel and congenital abnormalities. Ultrasound guided, invasive examinations include prostate, breast, liver and thyroid biopsies; and thoracentesis and paracentesis.
